Calvin's love for dogs and for the SPORT OF EXHIBITING his dogs
started over 60 years ago.
HERE'S THE WAY THE STORY WAS TOLD TO ME BY CALVIN'S MOTHER.
Years ago, when Calvin was a young boy he became very ill with rheumatic fever. He couldn't go to
school or play with his friends for a very long time. Calvin's doctor suggested to his parents that it
would be nice if he had a dog to keep him company while in confinement to the home.
Calvin’s father took him to a news stand and bought him a Dog World Magazine to help Cal make a
decision as to what breed of dog he would like to own.
After going through the pages of this Dog World magazine several times, looking at pictures and
reading about all the dogs that he liked.  Cal decided on a Cocker Spaniel and found a breeder in that
magazine that lived about 90 miles from them.  His father called to set up an appointment to meet the
Wyngarden's and the Cocker Spaniel they had for sale.
The next weekend Calvin and his family drove up to Richard and Lorraine Wyngarden's, Creekwood
Kennel of Chicago.
The Wyngarden's were very nice people and took the time to tell the family all about the breed.  As it
turned out the Wyngarden's acquired most of their Cocker's from what was then said to be the most
famous parti-color Cocker kennel in the country, the Honey Creek Kennel.
Calvin went home a very happy little boy with his first dog, a beautiful red and white Cocker Spaniel
male by the name of Creekwood Chieftain (call name – Socko).  The Wyngarden's told Cal and his
family that they had put one AKC point on Socko, but he couldn't finish his Championship because he
was one inch too tall.
The Wyngarden's told Calvin and his family to bring Socko back when he needed to be groomed and
they would teach them how to groom him.
Six weeks later Calvin and his dad drove back up to the Creekwood Kennel to learn how to groom
Socko.  This time they went home not only with Socko, but also with a beautiful little red & white
parti color female Cocker by the name of Creekwoods Miss Showoff (Pinky).
The Wyngarden's told Calvin and his dad that although Pinky is a beautiful girl, she couldn't be shown
due to her fault, a pink eye rim.  Pinky became a sweet and loving companion and she and Socko
were a great addition to the family.  Pinky, the little girl that had a fault (a pink eye rim which
disqualified her from being shown  WAS THE START OF A VERY FAMOUS COCKER SPANIEL KENNEL.
Calvin's dad purchased (Pinky), Miss Showoff, on an agreement to breed her to Ch Honey Creeks
Heirloom and the Wyngarden's got the first pick puppy, a bitch by the name of Ch Creekwood Calico
Lou.  CH Calico Lou was said to be one of the most beautiful Cocker Spainial Bitches of all times at
that time and won 16 Best of Opposites at the Cocker Spainiel Specialty shows.  Calvin and his
family kept a male, which they named King Richard, named after Richard Wyngarden.
Here is THE PEDIGREE THAT STARTED SCIOTO BLUFF'S COCKER KENNEL, a Creekwood/Scioto
Bluff Pedigree - Ch. Honey Creek Havana was bred to her litter brother Ch. Honey Creek Heirloom.
The resulting litter produced Ch. Creekwood Corsage and Creekwood Chessman. Chessman bred back
to his own mother produced Ch. Creekwood Mr. Big and Creekwood Miss Showoff (Pinky).  Creekwood
Miss Showoff produced Ch. Scioto Bluff's Judy and Judy produced Ch. Scioto Bluff Sinbad.
Calvin started working with Socko and in 1949 he won his first blue ribbon with him in Junior
Showmanship at the Skyline Kennel Club under Judge Norma Warner, at the age of nine.

Calvin has had three breeds of dogs during his lifetime.  He started with Cocker Spaniels and went
out of Cockers and started breeding and exhibiting Akita's in the late 1980's.   We had to go out of
Akita's in 2009 because Calvin has a bad knee and can't keep up with the Akita's in the ring, so we
placed our Akita's in nice homes and we are now enjoying a different breed.  Calvin is back in the ring
now with our new breed, our darling English Bulldogs.
